Life as a Hermit Crab

Goal Behind Animation
The assignment was to create a 30 second animation. I chose to animate a creature I grew up with, the hermit crab. I wanted to illustrate a cute, simple, and child-like hermit crab to bring the childhood part out. Then create a fun and realistic animation of the movements hermit crabs' use in their daily life.
Planning It Out
To showcase the life of a hermit crab I sketched out each part needed to create the movements it would do. With videos and experience in the past about hermit crabs' I created a storyboard that captured the specific things these creatures do, such as hiding in their shell, checking for predators and walking around.
Completed Assets
Final Animation
With more research and feedback on the movements of these hermit crabs, I found the movements needed to create this fun and realistic animation. The wiggle of the shell, the pull of the body when the legs hit, and the quick motions of hiding and peeking out of the shell create the unique ways that make hermit crabs what they are. Anyone who has owned or seen these creatures are able to recognize them from this animation and hopeful bring back the childhood curiosity and memories of hermit crabs.
